Beginnings… (part 1)

I suppose we all need to start somewhere….

Our start to this wonderful story of how Somers Family Farm came into being, began in the early Spring of 1993… We had 3 little’s in tow… all girls… a recent move to a small 40-acre farm and a lifetime full of dreams.

Brian, a 4th generation dairy farmer, came with much experience and know-how, and I, from a small nearby town with my only farm experience being practically living my summers at my best friend’s dairy farm, really knew nothing about farm life… well the non-romantic side of farm life, I should say. Those first years were quite rough, but at the same time, they were full of excitement and hope.

We started with Jersey cows and not many of them. I remember in the early days we had to put clothespins on the bulk tank agitator paddles so that the first milking could adequately be mixed and quickly cooled. Most months the bills were more than the profits and troubleshooting was an everyday event. I believe it was these early years, and… all the subsequent ones that built character, stamina, a don’t give-up attitude, and an even greater desire to reach for new dreams and set goals.

Notable to me, was that this “lifestyle” we had fully embraced was having such positive effects on our girls. Their love for barn kitties, cows, calves, being outdoors to explore and so much more caused them to flourish. Farming has a way of instilling a strong work ethic, maybe more than other professions because there is never any lack of it on any level. Learning age-appropriate chores, and responsibilities, and owning them, is in part what has shaped our girls, now adults to be in part who they are. Hard-working, reliable, not afraid to try new things, and great problem solvers.

Somewhere along the way, and due to circumstances that came into our lives, and out of necessity to diversity, our direction and plans changed and evolved into where we are today….

More to this story is yet to come…

Hope you will join in to hear the rest…

Farm on!

Kathy
